Evolution of 3-Pointers in NBA

The Motive and Dataset

How the game of basketball played is totally changed today compared to the 70s basketball
To analyze that change in the light of 3-point attempts and points
Games played in NBA through 2003-2021 seasons are used

Both 3-pointers attempted and made per game has increased through seasons
In the last 20 years, the number of 3-pointers shot per game has increased 2–3 times.
Not only the number of 3-pointers attempted and made increased but also the share of them in the total shots increases
In the beginning of 2000s, nearly 1 of 5 shots was a 3-pointer. However, for the current seasons this ratio is almost doubled meaning that for 5 shots attempted, 2 of them are 3-pointers

Free throw points share among all points in 2000s was around 20%
Especially after the end of 2000s the share of 3-pointers have dramatically increased, and 2-pointers have decreased
For the current seasons, the 2-pointers contribute to nearly half of all points while 3-pointers contribute to 35%
These shares were around 65% and 15% in the beginning of 2000s for the 2-pointers and 3-pointers respectively

When the 2000s analyzed, centers were playing close to the basket and rarely taking 3-pointers.
The percentage of the 3-pointers attempts among all the shots for all positions has increased significantly. This trend can be seen below
In the last years, the Splash Brothers has shown us the importance of the 3-pointers with 4 championship rings.
The graph below shows that how they are good at making 3-point shots. In the x-axis the number of 3-pointers attempted per game, and in the y axis the success rate for the 3-pointers can be seen.
For different seasons, we can see Steph on the upper right of the graph and can see Klay in the upper middle meaning that they are among the top 3-pointer shooters of the league.

Whether there is a correlation between Winning Percentage and After Timeout Plays efficiency is analyzed
It is hard to directly say that there is a correlation between After Timeout Play efficiency and Winning Percentage

Total shot attempts, successful shots and turnovers are calculated
Stacked bar chart is obtained
As seen in the graph Efes and Olympiacosare very good at scoring after timeouts while Baskonia is at the top

After obtaining separate values of Made Shots, Missed Shots, and Turnovers counts; an efficiency metric is calculated as follows:

After analyzing the after timeout plays at the team level, it makes sense to analyze them at the player level
The players who take the most shots after timeouts are obtained and their corresponding shots made, and total shots are graphed
As seen in the Figure, Mike James, Micic and Clyburn are the top three players in the Top 15 players
Except Dwayne Bacon, it can be siad that there is a coorelation between the number of shots made and shots attempts

Thomas Walkup and Sacha Vezenkov are the best duals in terms of assists numbers as Walkup assisted Vezenkov 84 times in 2022-23 season
All assists are splitted into the number of assists that results with 3 Points and 2 Points are obtained as well
Like all assist’s numbers, Walkup and Vezenkov are at the top of the list
